O Levels guide

What Are O Levels? A Plain Guide for Students and Parents

O Level is a secondary school qualification. In Pakistan the name usually means Cambridge O Level, which students take at the end of about two years of study, in the grades before A Level.

This guide explains what the course involves, how it is examined and how to plan the two years, so that students and parents know what to expect before they choose subjects.

What does O Level mean?

O Level stands for Ordinary Level. It is a subject-based qualification: a student chooses a set of subjects, studies each for two years and sits an examination in each. Results are reported subject by subject, not as one overall score.

Cambridge O Level is set by Cambridge International Education. Other qualifications at the same stage, such as IGCSE, have different syllabuses but a similar structure. Our guide to O Level and IGCSE compares them.

How many subjects do students take?

Schools set their own rules. Many students take between six and nine subjects, often including English, Mathematics, a science and a Pakistan-specific subject such as Islamiyat or Pakistan Studies. The school or exam centre confirms the required and optional subjects.

You can browse the subjects we cover on our O Levels tutors page, with the syllabus code for each.

How are O Levels examined?

Most subjects are assessed by written papers at the end of the course. Some include a practical test or a written alternative to practical, and a few have coursework. The exact papers are listed in each syllabus.

Cambridge examinations are held in the May/June and October/November series, and in some countries the February/March series. Your school or exam centre tells you which series you are entered for.

What happens after O Level?

Most students continue to A Level, AS Level or another pre-university programme. The grades they need depend on the school, the subject and the universities they hope to apply to later, so check requirements early.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to complete O Level?

Usually two years of study, followed by the examinations. Some students take a subject over a shorter or longer period, and the school or centre decides what is allowed.

Is O Level the same as matric?

No. Matric is the Pakistani board qualification, while O Level is an international qualification set by Cambridge. Equivalence rules are decided by the relevant authorities, so check with them if you need it.

Can I take O Level subjects as a private candidate?

Often yes, through an approved exam centre. Ask the centre about deadlines, fees and the series that are open.
