TOEFL Tutors: Updated TOEFL iBT Format, 1-6 Score Scale and an 8-Week Plan

TOEFL tutors help students practise the four TOEFL iBT skills, Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking, in the format ETS introduced in January 2026. This page explains the tasks, the 1 to 6 score scale, what changed, an 8-week plan and how to request a tutor from Trinity Tutors.

A tutor cannot know the questions of a particular sitting and cannot promise a score or a place. What a tutor can do is teach the content, build speed and accuracy, and show where marks are being lost. The facts below were read on the ETS website on 15 October 2026, and each section links to the official page so you can check it again.

What Is the TOEFL iBT?

The TOEFL iBT is an English proficiency test, run by ETS, that many universities accept for admission. It tests how well a person reads, listens, writes and speaks English in an academic setting.

ETS updated the test and its score scale from January 2026, so older books and videos may describe a different format. Check the date of any material before you rely on it.

Each university sets its own required score, so check the entry requirements of every course before you book.

No approved tutor is listed for this exact search right now. Send us a request and we will say honestly whether we can help; we do not promise a match.

TOEFL Syllabus: Sections and Task Types

ETS lists the sections and tasks on its TOEFL iBT test content page. The test is adaptive, so timing and the number of items may vary.

TOEFL iBT sections (ETS, read 15 October 2026)
SectionTasksItemsAbout
ReadingComplete the words; read in daily life; read an academic passage5030 minutes
ListeningListen and choose a response; conversation; announcement; academic talk4729 minutes
WritingBuild a sentence; write an email; write for an academic discussion1223 minutes
SpeakingListen and repeat; take an interview118 minutes

TOEFL Reading and Listening: skills to practise

These sections move from short everyday texts and talk to academic passages and lectures. Practise a steady pace and taking brief notes.

  • Completing words in a passage from context
  • Reading notices, messages and short articles for meaning
  • Following an academic talk and its main points

TOEFL Writing and Speaking: skills to practise

Writing begins with sentence building, then an email, then a contribution to an academic discussion. Speaking asks you to repeat what you hear and to answer interview questions.

  • Building accurate sentences from given words
  • Writing a clear, polite and purposeful email
  • Adding a reasoned point to an academic discussion
  • Speaking clearly and without long pauses

TOEFL Format, Timing and the 1 to 6 Score Scale

ETS says to allow about two hours. The base times of the four sections add up to 90 minutes, without directions, and the test has 120 items in all.

Scores are on a 1 to 6 scale, as described on the score scale update page. You receive four section scores and an overall score, which is the average of the four, rounded to the nearest half band.

For two years after January 2026, ETS also reports a comparable overall score on the older 0 to 120 scale, which helps while universities update their requirements.

  • 120 items across four sections, with adaptive timing and item counts.
  • Four section scores plus an overall score, each from 1 to 6.
  • A comparable 0 to 120 overall score is also reported for two years after January 2026.

TOEFL Dates, Booking and What Changed in 2026

TOEFL has no single national calendar either. Test dates and centres are chosen when you register on the ETS website, so check the ETS TOEFL pages for what is open to you. The table lists the dated changes that we read, on 15 October 2026.

What to Expect on TOEFL Test Day

The TOEFL iBT is taken on a computer, and ETS says to allow about two hours. Because the test is adaptive, the timing and the number of items can vary, so do not try to compare your experience with a friend's.

Read the instructions for each task, because several task types are new and have their own limits. In Speaking, answer promptly and clearly, since a short pause is better than a long silence.

Before you register, check which score scale each of your universities uses, as ETS reports a comparable 0 to 120 score for two years after January 2026.

Check the ETS pages for ID rules and for what you may bring, and read them in the week before your test.

  • Expect about two hours, with varying item counts.
  • Read each task's instructions with care.
  • Check each university's score scale.
  • Read ETS's ID rules before the day.

How TOEFL Tutors Help

Good TOEFL tutors start from a diagnostic test and works on the skill that lowers your score. Lessons usually combine these parts:

  • A first lesson with short tasks from every section, to find the weakest skill.
  • Practice on the new task types, such as building a sentence and the academic discussion.
  • Spoken feedback on repeating sentences and answering interview questions.
  • Written feedback on emails and academic discussion posts.
  • A mistake log that sorts errors into vocabulary, grammar, method and time.

An 8-Week TOEFL Study Plan

This is a sample plan to discuss with your tutor. Fit it to your booked date and your target score.

Weeks 1 to 2: diagnose and learn the tasks

Try each of the new task types once and read the official descriptions. Start a notebook of academic vocabulary by topic.

Weeks 3 to 5: build each skill

Write an email and an academic discussion post each week for feedback. Practise repeating sentences aloud and record interview answers.

Weeks 6 to 7: timed practice

Sit full sections in one go, in the order of the real test, and review what slowed you down.

Week 8: polish and rest

Repeat your weakest task types, check ID and test-day rules, and keep the last two days light.

Common Mistakes That Cost Marks in the TOEFL

These are patterns that TOEFL tutors describe often. Your tutor can tell which of them applies to you.

  • Practising with older materials that describe the previous format.
  • Ignoring the short tasks, such as sentence building, because they look easy.
  • Writing emails that are correct but do not do what the task asks.
  • Pausing for a long time in Speaking instead of answering simply.
  • Checking the university's score requirement only after the test.

How to Choose a TOEFL Tutor

Tutors on this site list the subjects and levels they teach, and our team approves a profile before it appears. What each tutor offers, where and at what fee differs, so read the profile and ask about a short trial lesson before you book.

Lessons can be online, or at your home in Islamabad, Rawalpindi and Lahore where a tutor is approved there. Our A Level online tutors page explains how online lessons work. Compare tutors with these questions:

  • Do they teach the updated TOEFL iBT, not the format before January 2026?
  • Can they give written and spoken feedback, with reference to the task types?
  • How do they use timed practice and mock tests?
  • Do they offer a short trial lesson, and what are the fee and schedule?
