About A Level Chemistry

Chemistry is a subject that connects what particles do, what an equation says and what is seen in the laboratory. A Level is the pre-university stage for students of about 16 to 18. Cambridge AS & A Level and Pearson Edexcel International A Level are common in Pakistan and the Gulf, while AQA and OCR A Levels follow the UK specifications.

A Level Chemistry is examined by written papers on physical, inorganic and organic chemistry, plus practical assessment that depends on the board. Boards group topics differently, so revise from your own specification.

Cambridge A Level and Pearson Edexcel International A Level report grades from A* to E. Cambridge AS Level reports a to e. Check how your board combines AS and A2 results.

A Level Chemistry Syllabus Codes and Exam Boards

Every syllabus has a code, and past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports are filed under it. Use the code on your school's course outline, and check it against the board's current syllabus, because boards withdraw and add syllabuses.

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel International A Level are examined in the May/June and October/November series. AQA and OCR A Levels are examined in the summer series.

For the rules, syllabuses and dates themselves, use the official websites: Cambridge International Education, Pearson Edexcel, AQA and OCR. Boards change details from time to time, so check them before you plan.

What You Study in A Level Chemistry

The exact content depends on the syllabus, but A Level Chemistry usually covers these areas. Your tutor will follow your own syllabus and school.

Students normally prepare over two years, often split into AS and A2, and the course leads on: a Level results are used for university admission, in Pakistan and abroad, so universities' own entry requirements matter as much as the grade.

  • Atomic structure, bonding and the periodic table
  • Moles, formulae and equations
  • Energetics and enthalpy cycles
  • Kinetics and equilibria, including Kc and Kp
  • Acids, bases and buffers
  • Electrochemistry and electrode potentials
  • Transition elements and complex ions
  • Organic chemistry: mechanisms, isomerism and synthesis
  • Analysis, spectroscopy and chromatography
  • Practical skills

Where Students Lose Marks in A Level Chemistry

These are the patterns we see described most often by teachers and examiners in Chemistry. A tutor can spot which of them applies to a particular student and work on it directly.

For A Levels Chemistry the papers are filed under CAIE 9701, Edexcel WCH (unit codes begin WCH), AQA 7405, OCR H032. Mark schemes and examiner reports for these codes show how A Level answers are credited, and cambridge A Level and Pearson Edexcel International A Level report grades from A* to E. Cambridge AS Level reports a to e. Check how your board combines AS and A2 results.

Equilibria and buffers

These questions combine several ideas. Setting out an ICE table and stating the assumption at each step keeps the argument clear.

Organic mechanisms

Curly arrows must start and end in the right place. Drawing them hundreds of times, then checking against a worked mechanism, is the only reliable method.

Practical and planning papers

Marks go to precise methods, controlled variables and sensible units. Students need to practise planning from a blank page.

Habits that protect marks

Typical slips are an unbalanced equation, a missing state symbol, forgetting the unit of concentration or gas volume, and describing a test result in loose words.

Spend the first minutes on recall questions you can finish fast, and leave multi-step calculations until the quick marks are secure.

How Chemistry Lessons Work

Each tutor plans lessons in their own way, so ask what a lesson with them looks like. A A Level student usually has about two years, often split into AS and A2 to cover the course, so lessons are paced against the exam series the student is aiming for. These parts are common to good Chemistry lessons:

  • writing and balancing equations with state symbols until it is automatic
  • mole calculations set out step by step, with units
  • learning the exact wording of tests and observations
  • past questions marked against the mark scheme's accepted answers

First lesson

A first lesson usually looks at the student's syllabus, recent marks and the topics they find hardest, so that the plan starts from the real gaps rather than from page one.

Homework and feedback

Work set between lessons is marked and discussed, and mistakes are sorted by cause. Note whether each lost mark came from recall (a test, a reaction), a calculation step, a missing unit or state symbol, or misreading the command word.

Weekly rhythm

A good week alternates one full paper with two short sessions that redo the questions you lost marks on, with a different area of the syllabus each time.

A Level Chemistry Study Plans: Full Course, Crash Course and Retakes

Students come to Chemistry at different points: some are starting the syllabus, some are weeks from an exam and some are sitting the paper again. These are the plans we usually discuss. They are examples, not fixed packages: the tutor and the family agree the length and the number of lessons.

Full course (usually 5 to 6 months for one stage, or the full two-year course)

Suits a student who needs weekly support through AS, A2 or the whole programme. Lessons follow the specification topic by topic, with problem sets, essay or data practice and timed past papers.

Crash course (usually about 3 months before the exam)

Suits a student who has covered the syllabus and wants a revision plan before the series. A diagnostic first, then revision of the topics that carry the most marks, with timed papers marked against the mark scheme.

Composite exam preparation (depends on how many papers are sat together)

Suits a student sitting AS and A2 papers in the same series. A plan that splits the time between both stages, with each part revised and tested before they are combined.

Past-paper month (usually about 1 month)

Suits a student who knows the content and needs exam practice. Timed papers, marked against the mark scheme, with a short review lesson after each.

Online and Home Chemistry Tutors

Lessons can be online or, in some cities, at the student's home. Our A Levels online tutors page explains how online lessons work, and the A Levels home tutors page explains home tuition.

Home tuition is arranged in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi. Online lessons are available in Pakistan, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq.

For A Levels Chemistry, ask the tutor which of CAIE, Edexcel, AQA and OCR they teach, because the syllabus and the paper names differ between boards.

A Level Chemistry Past Papers and Revision Resources

Past papers are the most useful revision material once the content has been learnt. Look at which words and chemical terms earn each mark and which alternative answers are accepted; chemistry mark schemes are specific about names, formulae and observations.

Browse the A Levels Chemistry past papers in our library, or use the board's subject list. We list only the files we have added, so check the board's website for the full set. Our guide on how to use past papers explains the method step by step.

How to Choose a Chemistry Tutor

Tutors on this site list the subjects and levels they teach, and our team approves a profile before it appears. What each tutor offers, where and at what fee differs, so read the profile and ask about a short trial lesson before you book.

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel International A Level are examined in the May/June and October/November series. AQA and OCR A Levels are examined in the summer series. Choose a tutor whose schedule fits the series the student is entering, and compare tutors fairly with these questions:

  • Which board and syllabus code do they teach, and have they taught A Levels Chemistry before?
  • How do they use past papers and mark schemes in lessons?
  • What does a lesson look like, and how is progress shared with parents?
  • Can they offer a short trial lesson, and what are the fee and the schedule?
  • How do they handle a topic the student keeps getting wrong?

Frequently Asked Questions

How is A Level Chemistry different from O Level?

It asks for more explanation and more mathematics. Students must connect ideas across topics, for example linking bonding to properties and to reaction mechanisms.

Is it better to revise by topic or by past paper?

Both. Revise a topic until the ideas are clear, then test it with questions from past papers. Later, mixed papers train timing and the choice of method.

How do I find a A Levels Chemistry tutor?

Browse the profiles on this page, or send a request with the board, the syllabus code and the topics that cause trouble. We will tell you honestly if we do not have a suitable tutor yet.

Do you offer A Levels Chemistry tuition online and at home?

Both are possible, depending on the tutor and the city. Online lessons are available in Pakistan, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq; home tuition is arranged in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi.

How much does a A Levels Chemistry tutor cost?

Fees are set by each tutor and differ with experience, the board and the format. Ask for the fee in your request, and agree it with the tutor before lessons start.

Can a tutor help with a retake?

Yes. A retake plan starts from the earlier result and the topics that lost marks, then follows a short, focused schedule. See the A Levels crash course page.

What is the best way to use past papers in Chemistry?

Group practice by area such as stoichiometry, energetics, equilibria or organic chemistry, so that repeated mistakes in one area become obvious.
