About A Level Economics

Economics is a subject that mixes theory, data and written evaluation. A Level is the pre-university stage for students of about 16 to 18. Cambridge AS & A Level and Pearson Edexcel International A Level are common in Pakistan and the Gulf, while AQA and OCR A Levels follow the UK specifications.

A Level Economics is examined by papers that combine multiple-choice, data response and essay questions. Boards divide microeconomics and macroeconomics differently.

Cambridge A Level and Pearson Edexcel International A Level report grades from A* to E. Cambridge AS Level reports a to e. Check how your board combines AS and A2 results.

A Level Economics Syllabus Codes and Exam Boards

Every syllabus has a code, and past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports are filed under it. Use the code on your school's course outline, and check it against the board's current syllabus, because boards withdraw and add syllabuses.

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel International A Level are examined in the May/June and October/November series. AQA and OCR A Levels are examined in the summer series.

For the rules, syllabuses and dates themselves, use the official websites: Cambridge International Education, Pearson Edexcel, AQA and OCR. Boards change details from time to time, so check them before you plan.

What You Study in A Level Economics

The exact content depends on the syllabus, but A Level Economics usually covers these areas. Your tutor will follow your own syllabus and school.

Students normally prepare over two years, often split into AS and A2, and the course leads on: a Level results are used for university admission, in Pakistan and abroad, so universities' own entry requirements matter as much as the grade.

  • Basic economic ideas and resource allocation
  • The price system and the microeconomy
  • Government microeconomic intervention
  • The macroeconomy and its measurement
  • Government macroeconomic intervention
  • International economic issues
  • Market structures and efficiency
  • Behavioural and development economics, depending on the specification

Where Students Lose Marks in A Level Economics

These are the patterns we see described most often by teachers and examiners in Economics. A tutor can spot which of them applies to a particular student and work on it directly.

For A Levels Economics the papers are filed under CAIE 9708, Edexcel WEC (unit codes begin WEC), AQA 7136, OCR H460. Mark schemes and examiner reports for these codes show how A Level answers are credited, and cambridge A Level and Pearson Edexcel International A Level report grades from A* to E. Cambridge AS Level reports a to e. Check how your board combines AS and A2 results.

Evaluation

Marks for judgement need a reasoned conclusion. Practise weighing short-run against long-run effects and stating what the answer depends on.

Diagrams that shift

Moves in curves must be explained step by step. Draw, label and narrate the change.

Data response

Quote the data and interpret it. Answers that restate theory without using the figures lose marks.

Habits that protect marks

Typical slips are a definition without application to the case, unlabelled calculations, and a conclusion that is not supported by the earlier points.

Read the case before the questions and note the figures; then divide your time by marks, leaving evaluation questions enough space.

How Economics Lessons Work

Each tutor plans lessons in their own way, so ask what a lesson with them looks like. A A Level student usually has about two years, often split into AS and A2 to cover the course, so lessons are paced against the exam series the student is aiming for. These parts are common to good Economics lessons:

  • building diagrams from scratch and labelling every curve and axis
  • short definitions and calculations drilled until accurate
  • applying theory to a short case or news item
  • essay answers with a point, an application and an evaluation

First lesson

A first lesson usually looks at the student's syllabus, recent marks and the topics they find hardest, so that the plan starts from the real gaps rather than from page one.

Homework and feedback

Work set between lessons is marked and discussed, and mistakes are sorted by cause. Record whether marks were lost for calculation errors, missing application to the context, weak evaluation or unfamiliar terms.

Weekly rhythm

A good week pairs one paper with a drill on the calculation types you missed and a rewrite of one evaluation answer using the case.

A Level Economics Study Plans: Full Course, Crash Course and Retakes

Students come to Economics at different points: some are starting the syllabus, some are weeks from an exam and some are sitting the paper again. These are the plans we usually discuss. They are examples, not fixed packages: the tutor and the family agree the length and the number of lessons.

Full course (usually 5 to 6 months for one stage, or the full two-year course)

Suits a student who needs weekly support through AS, A2 or the whole programme. Lessons follow the specification topic by topic, with problem sets, essay or data practice and timed past papers.

Crash course (usually about 3 months before the exam)

Suits a student who has covered the syllabus and wants a revision plan before the series. A diagnostic first, then revision of the topics that carry the most marks, with timed papers marked against the mark scheme.

Composite exam preparation (depends on how many papers are sat together)

Suits a student sitting AS and A2 papers in the same series. A plan that splits the time between both stages, with each part revised and tested before they are combined.

Past-paper month (usually about 1 month)

Suits a student who knows the content and needs exam practice. Timed papers, marked against the mark scheme, with a short review lesson after each.

Online and Home Economics Tutors

Lessons can be online or, in some cities, at the student's home. Our A Levels online tutors page explains how online lessons work, and the A Levels home tutors page explains home tuition.

Home tuition is arranged in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi. Online lessons are available in Pakistan, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq.

For A Levels Economics, ask the tutor which of CAIE, Edexcel, AQA and OCR they teach, because the syllabus and the paper names differ between boards.

A Level Economics Past Papers and Revision Resources

Past papers are the most useful revision material once the content has been learnt. Look at how marks are split between knowledge, application and evaluation, and check each part of your answer against that split.

Browse the A Levels Economics past papers in our library, or use the board's subject list. We list only the files we have added, so check the board's website for the full set. Our guide on how to use past papers explains the method step by step.

How to Choose a Economics Tutor

Tutors on this site list the subjects and levels they teach, and our team approves a profile before it appears. What each tutor offers, where and at what fee differs, so read the profile and ask about a short trial lesson before you book.

Cambridge and Pearson Edexcel International A Level are examined in the May/June and October/November series. AQA and OCR A Levels are examined in the summer series. Choose a tutor whose schedule fits the series the student is entering, and compare tutors fairly with these questions:

  • Which board and syllabus code do they teach, and have they taught A Levels Economics before?
  • How do they use past papers and mark schemes in lessons?
  • What does a lesson look like, and how is progress shared with parents?
  • Can they offer a short trial lesson, and what are the fee and the schedule?
  • How do they handle a topic the student keeps getting wrong?
