AS Level and A2 Explained

Many students hear AS and A2 used as if everyone knows what they mean. This guide explains the terms and the choices that follow from them.

AS Level

AS is the first half of the course. It covers the earlier content of each subject and can stand as a qualification by itself, with its own result.

A2

A2 is the second half. It builds on AS and is combined with AS results to give the full A Level grade. A2 papers are usually harder and ask for more connection between topics.

Ways to take them

Many students sit AS papers at the end of the first year and A2 papers at the end of the second. Some boards and centres allow AS and A2 papers in the same series, which is called sitting composite papers. Rules and availability depend on the board and the centre.

If you plan to do this, build the revision plan around both parts. Our crash course page describes how we plan this kind of preparation.

AS Level and A2: Where to Go Next

If you want help with a subject, see A Levels tutors. For more guides, see A Levels resources, and for exam papers, our past-paper library.

For the rules, syllabuses and dates themselves, use the official websites: Cambridge International Education, Pearson Edexcel, AQA and OCR. Boards change details from time to time, so check them before you plan.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do I have to take AS first?

That depends on the board and the centre. Ask before planning your course.

Does AS count towards the A Level?

In a staged course, the AS result is combined with A2. Check how your board does it.

Is it better to sit both in one series?

It saves time but needs a strong plan and a lot of revision. Many students find splitting the load easier.
