About O Level Biology

Biology is a subject with a lot to remember and a lot to explain. Cambridge O Level is the qualification most Pakistani students take at the end of secondary school. It is usually studied over two years, in the grades before A Level, and it is examined at the end of the course.

Biology is examined by written papers combining multiple-choice, structured and longer questions, with practical skills tested through a practical paper or an alternative to practical, depending on the syllabus. Check the structure on your syllabus.

Cambridge O Level results are reported on a scale from A* (highest) to E.

O Level Biology Syllabus Codes and Exam Boards

Every syllabus has a code, and past papers, mark schemes and examiner reports are filed under it. Use the code on your school's course outline, and check it against the board's current syllabus, because boards withdraw and add syllabuses.

Cambridge examinations are held in the May/June and October/November series; the February/March series is limited to some countries.

For the rules, syllabuses and dates themselves, use the official websites: Cambridge International Education. Boards change details from time to time, so check them before you plan.

What You Study in O Level Biology

The exact content depends on the syllabus, but O Level Biology usually covers these areas. Your tutor will follow your own syllabus and school.

Students normally prepare over two years, and the course leads on: most students move on to A Level, AS Level or another pre-university programme after O Level.

  • Characteristics and classification of living things
  • Cells, movement into and out of cells
  • Enzymes and nutrition
  • Transport in plants and animals
  • Gas exchange and respiration
  • Coordination, response and homeostasis
  • Reproduction and inheritance
  • Organisms and the environment
  • Human influences on the ecosystem

Where Students Lose Marks in O Level Biology

These are the patterns we see described most often by teachers and examiners in Biology. A tutor can spot which of them applies to a particular student and work on it directly.

For O Levels Biology the papers are filed under CAIE 5090. Mark schemes and examiner reports for these codes show how O Level answers are credited, and cambridge O Level results are reported on a scale from A* (highest) to E.

Keywords

Mark schemes credit specific terms. Writing answers with the keywords from the syllabus, not general descriptions, earns marks.

Explaining, not listing

Questions ask students to describe or explain a process. Answers that stop halfway lose marks, so practise writing the full chain.

Data and graph questions

Many marks come from quoting values and describing trends. Practise reading axes and units, and say what the graph shows.

Habits that protect marks

Typical slips are an answer that is true but not specific enough, missing the comparative word in a comparison, and describing when the question asks for an explanation.

Read the data or diagram first, because many marks come from quoting figures; then write answers with one point per mark available.

How Biology Lessons Work

Each tutor plans lessons in their own way, so ask what a lesson with them looks like. A O Level student usually has about two years to cover the course, so lessons are paced against the exam series the student is aiming for. These parts are common to good Biology lessons:

  • turning lists of facts into chains of cause and effect
  • labelled diagrams drawn from memory and checked
  • keyword lists built from mark schemes
  • data and graph questions that practise quoting figures

First lesson

A first lesson usually looks at the student's syllabus, recent marks and the topics they find hardest, so that the plan starts from the real gaps rather than from page one.

Homework and feedback

Work set between lessons is marked and discussed, and mistakes are sorted by cause. Record whether a mark was lost because a keyword was missing, an explanation stopped halfway, data was not quoted, or the command word was misread.

Weekly rhythm

A good week pairs one paper with a keyword review of the topics you missed, followed by rewriting two long answers from memory.

O Level Biology Study Plans: Full Course, Crash Course and Retakes

Students come to Biology at different points: some are starting the syllabus, some are weeks from an exam and some are sitting the paper again. These are the plans we usually discuss. They are examples, not fixed packages: the tutor and the family agree the length and the number of lessons.

Full course (usually 6 to 8 months, or the whole two-year course)

Suits a student who is starting a subject or has fallen behind the school's pace. Lessons follow the syllabus topic by topic, with homework, regular timed questions and a past-paper phase before the exam.

Crash course (usually 2 to 3 months before the exam)

Suits a student who has covered the syllabus but needs a structured revision plan. A diagnostic first, then focused revision of the weakest topics, with timed past-paper practice and marking.

Retake preparation (usually 1 to 2 months, depending on the gap)

Suits a student who is sitting the paper again in the next series. The previous result and mistakes are reviewed first, then lessons target the topics and question types that cost marks.

Online and Home Biology Tutors

Lessons can be online or, in some cities, at the student's home. Our O Levels online tutors page explains how online lessons work, and the O Levels home tutors page explains home tuition.

Home tuition is arranged in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi. Online lessons are available in Pakistan, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq.

For O Levels Biology, ask the tutor which of CAIE they teach, because the syllabus and the paper names differ between boards.

O Level Biology Past Papers and Revision Resources

Past papers are the most useful revision material once the content has been learnt. Compare the key terms in the mark scheme with your own wording, and check how many separate points a question expects.

Browse the O Levels Biology past papers in our library, or use the board's subject list. We list only the files we have added, so check the board's website for the full set. Our guide on how to use past papers explains the method step by step.

How to Choose a Biology Tutor

Tutors on this site list the subjects and levels they teach, and our team approves a profile before it appears. What each tutor offers, where and at what fee differs, so read the profile and ask about a short trial lesson before you book.

Cambridge examinations are held in the May/June and October/November series; the February/March series is limited to some countries. Choose a tutor whose schedule fits the series the student is entering, and compare tutors fairly with these questions:

  • Which board and syllabus code do they teach, and have they taught O Levels Biology before?
  • How do they use past papers and mark schemes in lessons?
  • What does a lesson look like, and how is progress shared with parents?
  • Can they offer a short trial lesson, and what are the fee and the schedule?
  • How do they handle a topic the student keeps getting wrong?

Frequently Asked Questions

How should I revise so much content?

Break the syllabus into topics, write a one-page summary of each from memory, and test yourself with questions. Revisit weak topics several times instead of rereading all of them once.

What is the difference between Biology and Human and Social Biology?

They are separate syllabuses with different content. Biology covers living things generally, while Human and Social Biology concentrates on the human body and society. Check which one your school has entered you for.

How do I find a O Levels Biology tutor?

Browse the profiles on this page, or send a request with the board, the syllabus code and the topics that cause trouble. We will tell you honestly if we do not have a suitable tutor yet.

Do you offer O Levels Biology tuition online and at home?

Both are possible, depending on the tutor and the city. Online lessons are available in Pakistan, United Kingdom, United States, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Oman, Qatar, Bahrain, United Arab Emirates, Kuwait and Iraq; home tuition is arranged in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Lahore and Karachi.

How much does a O Levels Biology tutor cost?

Fees are set by each tutor and differ with experience, the board and the format. Ask for the fee in your request, and agree it with the tutor before lessons start.

Can a tutor help with a retake?

Yes. A retake plan starts from the earlier result and the topics that lost marks, then follows a short, focused schedule. See the O Levels crash course page.

What is the best way to use past papers in Biology?

Revise by body system or topic, then use topic questions to practise writing complete, point-by-point answers.
