A Levels Exam Techniques and Tips

At A Level, knowing the content is not enough: students also need to answer in the way the mark scheme rewards.

Learn the command words

Words such as describe, explain, evaluate and compare ask for different responses. Underline the command word in each question and check that your answer does what it asks.

Plan long answers

Spend a minute on a plan: your main points in order, evidence for each and a conclusion where one is needed. Plans prevent drifting and help you finish in time.

Use mark schemes

After a practice paper, compare your answer with the scheme. Notice the words credited, the number of separate points and how marks are split between knowledge, application and evaluation.

Manage the paper

Divide the time by the marks. If you are stuck, move on and return later. Leave a few minutes to check calculations and units.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I improve my essay marks?

Write timed essays, mark them against the scheme and rewrite the weakest paragraph. Have a teacher or tutor comment on one essay at a time.

How should I use examiner reports?

Read them after marking a paper, to see whether your mistakes are common and how stronger answers were written.

Is it worth memorising model answers?

Use them to see the structure, then write your own. Memorised answers rarely fit the question exactly.
